The Internet Society Nigeria Chapter (ISOC Nigeria) is actively playing a pivotal role in fostering digital inclusion and promoting online safety within communities across Nigeria, including the burgeoning town of Abule-Iroko. Their efforts are particularly focused on the development of community networks and the observance of Safer Internet Day, with a significant collaboration with local media and communications outfit, DNS Africa Media and Communications.
Recognizing the critical need to bridge the digital divide, ISOC Nigeria has been a strong advocate for the establishment of community networks – locally-owned and operated internet infrastructure that empowers underserved populations. In Abule-Iroko, this commitment is materializing through a collaborative partnership with the Success Bridge Community Development Foundation’s initiative to connect Lords Favor Schools and the surrounding community.
“Community networks offer a sustainable and empowering solution to bring internet access to those who need it most,” says Caleb Ogundele, ISOC Nigeria Chapter President. “By putting the power of connectivity in the hands of the community, we can unlock immense opportunities for education, economic growth, and social development. Our chapter is dedicated to providing the resources, knowledge, and support needed to make these networks a reality.”
ISOC Nigeria actively participates in knowledge-sharing workshops, technical guidance, and policy advocacy to support the growth of community networks nationwide. Their involvement in the Abule-Iroko project includes connecting the Success Bridge team with best practices, potential technology partners (such as Community NetHUBs, where Mr. Adebunmi Adeola Akinbo, CEO of DNS Africa Media and Communications, plays a leading role), and guidance on sustainable models for network operation.
Furthermore, ISOC Nigeria is a key driver in promoting online safety through its active participation in Safer Internet Day (SID), a global initiative held annually in February. The chapter organizes and supports events across Nigeria to raise awareness about online safety issues, responsible technology use, and the importance of creating a better internet for all, especially children and young people.
In Abule-Iroko, this year’s Safer Internet Day saw a significant collaboration between ISOC Nigeria and DNS Africa Media and Communications. DNS Africa, a local media and communications firm with deep roots in the community, played a crucial role in disseminating information about online safety best practices through local channels, including community radio announcements and social media campaigns.
Mr. Adebunmi Adeola Akinbo, CEO of DNS Africa Media and Communications and also a key figure in Community NetHUBs Africa, emphasized the importance of this collaboration: “As a local organization deeply invested in the well-being of Abule-Iroko, we recognize the transformative power of the internet. However, with increased connectivity comes the responsibility to ensure our community members, especially our children, are safe online. Our partnership with ISOC Nigeria on Safer Internet Day allows us to leverage their expertise and reach our community effectively with vital safety messages.”
The collaboration in Abule-Iroko for Safer Internet Day included awareness talks at Lords Favor Schools facilitated by DNS Africa with ISOC Nigeria resources, radio segments on online safety, community workshops by Cornerstone Broadcast (CornersCAST). This grassroots approach ensures that online safety messages are culturally relevant and reach the intended audience effectively.
The synergy between ISOC Nigeria’s national expertise in community networks and online safety, combined with DNS Africa Media and Communications’ local presence and understanding of the Abule-Iroko community, creates a powerful force for positive digital change. Their ongoing collaboration promises to not only connect the unconnected but also to empower them with the knowledge and skills to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly.
